Chapter 9

Georgiana’s presentation at court was an overall success. She had been nervous and almost tripped on her train, but no one seemed to have noticed. Her aunt Matlock was extremely proud. She met her brother back home and both he and Elizabeth had gifts for her “It feels like Christmas” she declared, all her family was reunited at Darcy house for her ball, which would commence soon.

She first opened her brother’s gift, it was a beautiful pearl parure, complete with a tiara and fit for a modern young woman. She kissed his cheek in gratitude.

Next she opened Elizabeth’s, it was much simpler but no less dear to her heart. A stunning silver locket with two portraits, one of Georgiana’s late mother and one of the girl herself. She hugged Lizzie tightly and whispered her thanks.

She took her cousin Richard aside to speak to him “Has my brother told you the news?”

Richard feigned casualty when he answered “that he is to be married? He might have mentioned it”

She would have liked to talk to him more, and brag about being right, but the first of her guests had just arrived, so she figured she would leave that for later.

The ball was a merry affair, Darcy danced the first set with his sister, while Richard took Elizabeth to the floor. The colonel teased Lizzie mercilessly about her upcoming nuptials, and all she could do was laugh at him.

Darcy would have liked to dance with his betrothed next, but Bingley beat him to it “I am considering leasing an estate in hertfordshire, to see if I am up to being a landed gentleman”

Elizabeth thought that was a magnificent idea “and when do you plan to do it?”

Bingley smiled at her “I thought that next month would be lovely, Caroline says I’m too impulsive, and she’s right, I can’t help it”

Elizabeth laughed “I am certain all your friends value you for it” at least one friend did.

He spun her around the dancefloor “Would you like to come and stay with us when we go?”

Elizabeth thought about it “I don’t know if Mr Darcy would wish to leave so soon during Georgiana’s first season”

Bingley winked at her “you can come without him if you wish”

Oh “You are very generous, I’ll give it a thought” she didn’t need to think about it to know she would never willingly leave Mr Darcy.

Mr Bingley seemed satisfied with her answer however “I was thinking you might wish to look for a doctor here in London to aid in your memory, I can’t believe Darcy hasn’t thought of it, Mr Lawrence is a very splendid physician”

“Thank you, sir, but I assure you my memories are returning of their own volition” Lizzie replied.

“Are they?” Mr Bingley seemed surprised “Do you recall anything interesting?”

Elizabeth thought of something she wouldn’t mind sharing “I remember my sisters’ names”

“How wonderful” he exclaimed.

That night when she went to bed she remembered Mr Bingley speaking of Hertfordshire, and something stirred in her mind.

Elizabeth woke up scared. She had to run, she didn’t stop to think why, she just knew she had to leave.
